What are the Side Effects of Minoxidil?

For the millions of people, especially men who have been fighting hair loss, Minoxidil seemed like the answer to a prayer and for many of them it has been as it has helped restore the hair that had been lost. But like many medications that are put out on the market, despite all of the research and testing there are always going to be some problems and while the side effects of Minoxidil are for the most part relatively minor they still exist and can be a problem for some users.

Perhaps one of the most common Minoxidil side effects is an itchy scalp. Research, however has shown that in most cases this is not caused by the actual medication in Minoxidil, but rather by the alcohol that the medication is mixed with that dries out the scalp. Often laser therapy is mixed in conjunction with Minoxidil treatment; this helps to reduce the itching as the laser helps to stimulate blood flow in the area and keeps the skin healthier.

Oddly enough while people use Minoxidil to help restore their hair there have been reports that it has caused those losing their hair to lose even more hair. The manufacturers claim that this is quite normal and that once the old hair has fallen out, the new hair that grows in to replace will be thicker and far stronger. Extended use can lead to a point where when the patient stops using it the scalp becomes weak and the new heavier hair may fall out leaving the patient right back where they started.

As with any type of medication, but most especially with topically applied medications, there is a distinct possibility of the patient having some form of allergic reaction. The possibility of a rash forming exists but it is the propylene glycol that seems to be at issue more than the actual medication. If you skin absorbs too much of this it can result in hypertension, more commonly known as high blood pressure.

However while for the most part the side effects of Minoxidil are simple and easy to cope with there are a few less common ones that can be more serious. If the patient experiences chest pains, irregular heartbeats or tingling in their hands or feet they should contact their doctor immediately. Other side effects may include lowered libido and acne developing in the area of treatment; again if these occur medical help should be consulted.
